The High Line Canal is embedded in the memory of so many who were raised in the Denver Metro area. From using the Canal to irrigate land to splashing around in the water on hot days. This treasured asset can be celebrated with the stories of those who remember it fondly. Hear from Vicki Peirce on what the Canal means to her.

For the past 60 years, the High Line Canal has been a way for me to connect with family, friends and nature. My first memory of the Canal was collecting wild asparagus with my mother. As a child, my friends and I used the Canal trail as our path to school. We spent many carefree times riding our bikes along the Canal trail.

As a young mother, my husband and I took our young children on walks and bike rides along the trail. As they got older, the kids would take off on their own adventures to the many parks along the Canal, their only instructions being to return home before dinner.

I have taken the grandchildren for nature walks along the Canal, pointing out snakes, birds, foxes and squirrels. I pointed out nests in the trees and wild plums, harvested some chokecherries and made jelly.

Now I walk along the Canal, sometimes with friends, family members, or the dogs. The dogs enjoy sniffing all the wondrous smells. They have met horses, other dogs and occasionally goats on a leash. Our community is lucky to have this wonderful trail winding its way across town.
