In 2021, photographer John Abramson ventured across all 71 miles of the Canal on behalf of the Conservancy to capture the stories and faces of those who love the old Canal. We are pleased to share some of these stories with you.

Community Connections & Memories: Chalk Messages Along the High Line Canal

Nestled against the peaceful expanse of the High Line Canal, the home of Jason Long, Daniella Morello and their daughter Sofia makes it simple to embrace nature. The tranquility of the trail enhances their days, a place where you can escape the urban rush for peace and natural beauty.

Each day the family embarks on their ritual—a family walk along the Canal. In those moments, time seems to slow and the world’s worries fade into the background. Six-year-old Sofia’s laughter fills the air as she pedals her bike beside her parents — the trail full of exploration and discovery.

It was on these family outings that Sofia’s journey of independence took flight. The Canal’s gentle path became her training ground, her hands clutching the handlebars as determination sparkled in her eyes. One day, her wobbling turned into balance and she pedaled forward, launching into her new favorite activity.

As the world faced the isolating grasp of a pandemic, the family’s connection to the Canal deepened. Sofia’s spirit remained unyielding, and she found a way to bring a touch of joy to others. Armed with chalk, she etched messages of hope and happiness onto the trail. “Keep smiling,” “You’re not alone,” her messages encouraged passersby.

Sofia’s act of kindness didn’t stop there. Along with messages, she left chalk for others to respond. The trail became a canvas of connection. Neighbors and strangers became part of an intricate web of chalk and camaraderie.

The Canal has become a part of this family’s story. The memories etched on its trails, the lessons learned, the connection forged – woven into the fabric of their lives. The Canal remains a steadfast companion through the highs and lows, the pandemic’s grip and the everyday moments of bliss.

As the Long Morello family walks along the Canal, they carry with them memories and the essence of connection, community and the enduring power of a child’s chalk-stained messages.
