When using trails like the High Line Canal, it’s important to remember proper trail etiquette. The Share the Canal principles are designed to ensure a fun and safe experience for all users.

Passing Party Time: Alert and On Your Left!

Remember the magic Words: “On Your Left!” When passing someone from behind, use an audible signal to let them know you’re approaching. Cyclists can use a bike bell to alert folks of passing, but please avoid bells around horses, as the noise could startle them. Please approach equines with caution and use your voice to signal your presence. It’s important to inform fellow trail users of your presence and prevent surprises or potential accidents.

When passing, leave at least 3 feet of space. Everyone can be comfortable and feel safe on the trail by keeping a safe distance.

By embracing passing etiquette, we foster a sense of community among trail users and demonstrate mutual respect. Together, we can ensure the Canal community enjoys their time on the trail.
