We want to share all 71 miles of the High Line Canal with fellow trail users and the wildlife that calls it home! The Canal has over 250 species of birds, mammals and reptiles that live along it – it is a haven for wildlife in the metro area. Let’s explore how to Share the Canal with wildlife!

Wildlife Rockstars: Respect and Protect!

Help keep the WILD in wildlife. We need to minimize our impact on wildlife and the Canal environment to ensure they can thrive undisturbed. A whole host of adverse environmental impacts can arise from human-wildlife interactions, including:

  • Aggressive animals
  • Relocation of animals
  • Declining ecosystem health

How can we show respect to wildlife? One way is to observe them from a distance. Never follow or approach wildlife. Getting a great photo is not nearly as important as respecting animals. Also, while getting closer for a better view or photograph may be tempting, giving animals their space is crucial to their well-being and safety. It is also essential to avoid wildlife during sensitive times like mating, nesting, raising young or during winter. Staying on designated trails and respecting any signage indicating off-limits areas to help protect vital habitats from disturbances.

Ensure the Canal’s wildlife can thrive for generations to come by showing it the respect it deserves.
