The High Line Canal is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and pet lovers alike. When we traverse the Canal with our furry friends, it’s essential to remember proper trail etiquette. That is why we established the Share the Canal principles, to help all users keep trail etiquette in mind as they travel the Canal. Let’s examine a principle that pertains to our four-legged companions.

Leash the Beast: Dogs Welcome!

We encourage you to unleash the fun while keeping our pets close and on leash. The Canal requires pets to be on a 6ft or shorter leash. And yes, that leash needs to be connected to a human (we know all the tricks).

A short leash allows people to maintain better control over pets, preventing hazardous encounters with fellow trail users, wildlife or other potential hazards along the trail. Long leashes and extendable leashes are best to leave at home while exploring this regional trail. And please remember, although Colorado is full of pet lovers, not everyone may be comfortable around your furry best friend or have dog allergies, so please don’t let your pet approach others without consent.

Please avoid allowing your dog to disturb or chase wildlife. Also, keep your course along the path to help protect the native flora. It’s also important to clean up after your pet, but we’ll cover that in detail in another Share the Canal principle.

Responsible dog ownership ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for the pups and people meandering the Canal. Thank you for keeping your canine companion close and on a leash so everyone can enjoy this pet-friendly trail!
