Trails, like the High Line Canal, offer a serene escape into nature, inviting outdoor enthusiasts to explore the beauty of Colorado in a metro area. Whether you’re cycling, jogging, riding or strolling along the trail, one crucial aspect of trail etiquette is maintaining a safe speed. This is one of our Share the Canal principles to help all trail users maintain good trail etiquette.

Chillax Your Speed: 15 MPH or Less

Maintaining a moderate speed on the trail is more than just a rule; it’s a responsible choice that positively impacts the overall trail experience. By embracing this principle, we contribute to a safe, enjoyable and inclusive environment for everyone, ensuring everyone can enjoy the trail’s offerings without worry or disruption.

Most of the Canal has a 15 MPH maximum speed limit. If posted otherwise, speeds may increase. This speed guideline is a standard benchmark for most trail users, creating a balance between momentum and control. Whether you’re cycling or using other modes of transportation, sticking to this speed limit helps reduce the risk of accidents. In congested areas and around blind curves, please decrease your speed from the 15 MPH maximum.

Tips for chillaxing your speed:

  1. Be Mindful: Stay aware of your surroundings. Adapt your speed to the trail’s conditions and the presence of other users.
  2. Communicate: Use clear and friendly signals when passing others. Give ample notice of your approach.
  3. Yield when Necessary: Cyclists and pedestrians should yield to equestrians. Cyclists should yield to pedestrians.
  4. Reduce Speed at Intersections: Slow down and exercise extra caution when approaching intersections, crosswalks and blind curves.

Did You Know – reducing speed not only benefits safety but also has a positive impact on the environment? Lower rates of speed reduce the generation of dust and soil erosion, helping preserve the trail’s natural beauty and the delicate ecosystems it supports. By embracing eco-friendly speeds, you’re helping protect the High Line Canal and its surrounding wildlife.

Keeping your pace cool and safe, we ensure a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Pace responsibly!
