In 2021, photographer John Abramson ventured across all 71 miles of the Canal on behalf of the Conservancy to capture the stories and faces of those who love the old Canal. We are pleased to share some of these stories with you.

Fred’s Electric Bike Adventure: Conquering Hills on the High Line Canal

Fred, a retired machinist, finds joy and freedom in long rides along the Canal. Drawing upon his skills and expertise, he embarked on an innovative project during retirement: creating a custom electric bike to enhance his cycling experience.

In just four hours, Fred meticulously assembled an electric bike, incorporating features tailored to his needs. The powerful motor helps him conquer hills on and around the Canal, while a GPS screen ensures he never gets lost. A rear-view camera added an extra layer of safety and an auto tire inflator provided peace of mind during his rides.

Equipped with his creation, Fred regularly partakes in urban adventures along the Canal. The electric bike propels him up inclines, granting him the freedom to explore every corner of the trail (that e-bikes are permitted). With each ride, he discovered hidden gems and reveled in the breathtaking scenery.
