The Conservancy relies on our partners and volunteers to help care for all 71 miles of the High Line Canal. We are grateful for all our volunteers who step up and make a difference for the Canal through cleanups, brush removals, tree plantings, weed removals and office support! We are excited to share about some of our fantastic volunteers. One such person is Brian O’Malley. Brian has been volunteering with the Conservancy for six years! His dedication inspires us all. What inspired you to volunteer to support the High Line Canal?

I started in 2017 walking all 71 miles with sponsored Hike Leader Chris Englert. I saw what a great amenity the Canal was and its potential. From there, I attended the public planning meetings, which led me to the cleanup events.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering with the High Line Canal Conservancy?

A clean ditch is a happy ditch! I saw the great benefits from cleaning up the Canal and its easement. Cleaning up large trash items to the smallest of plastics all help the environment.

What does the Canal mean to you?

The Canal is a great recreation area and greenspace, coursing through my own Douglas County and neighboring jurisdictions. The Canal’s history is fascinating with its evolving uses that will benefit generations to come.

What is your favorite memory of volunteering to support the Canal?

Each volunteer event has its own special place. I get to personally see the challenges ahead and the progress that has been made. The Canal’s future is great.

Volunteers help build awareness, increase engagement and enhance the Canal’s ecological health. Are you already a volunteer? THANK YOU! Are you interested in learning more about ways you can get involved? Visit our volunteer page to learn more!

See you on the Canal!
