Nocturnal Nature Hike
July 18 and 25
Join us for a sunset nature hike to search for nocturnal wildlife along the Canal!
We’ll start the evening in the classroom to learn about Canal wildlife and how to spot them. Then we’ll head out onto the trail to look and listen for owls, bats, insects, and more. We’ll use technology to listen to bats’ ultrasonic echolocation calls and identify the species of bats we hear based on their calls! We’ll also learn about the territorial behavior of great-horned owls and head into their territory to see if we can hear them calling or spot them waking up for the evening.
Registration is required.

- Time: 7 – 9 p.m.
- Distance: Around 1 mile
- Location: Robert and Judi Newman Outdoor Education Campus
- Parking: 4010 E Orchard Rd, Centennial CO 80121
- What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes and a sense of adventure! We will provide red-light headlamps to light our walk.
- Accessibility: There are restrooms available at the beginning and end of the walk. We will be slowly traveling on a flat gravel trail and narrower flat dirt trails. There are no benches available along the walking path.
- Pets: Please leave your pets at home for this adventure.
All registrants must sign a waiver at the event. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian signature on the waiver and children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
